World Environment Day 2013

Today celebrates World Environment Day so we are encouraging everyone to do their bit and help make a difference.

With some parts of the world being badly affected by famine, drought and poverty, it is worth taking the day to reflect on the things you are lucky enough to have, and how you can take a small step to changing your lifestyle to have a positive impact on the lives of those less fortunate.

Change one thing

Simple things that would seem insignificant in your daily life can make a huge difference to someone else’s especially with a collective effort, it will also save you money. For instance turning off the tap while brushing your teeth can save an incredible 36 litres of water, dripping taps can waste an extortionate 5,500 litres of water a year, and choosing to shower  uses around two thirds less water than having a bath- a typical bath can hold approximately 80 litres of water! Showers should still remain short though as they are more efficient than bathing.

Installing a contemporary toilet and cistern in your bathroom is more environmentally friendly as they are more conservative with their water usage under new regulations. These toilets often have a dual flush which offers a longer or shorter flush as required, therefore not wasting water on a full flush when it is not needed.

Environmentally friendly innovations

Some manufacturers such as Roca are introducing environmentally friendly innovations such as the W+W basin and toilet which recycles the water from the basin into the flush. It is also ideal for cloakrooms with its compact design.
