6 Things To Consider Before A Bathroom Renovation

Your bathroom may be ready for renovation, but are you? There are so many things to consider when you are planning to renovate any room in your house, it can often turn into a time-consuming, costly and overwhelming experience. Our checklist will give you the basics to get you off to the right start.

1. Budget

Setting yourself a realistic budget early on in the project will help you make key decisions about what you can and cannot include. And don't forget a contingency pot.

2. Schedule

Just because your bathroom is the smallest room in your house, doesn't mean the work will only take a couple of days. Set out a realistic schedule and be aware that as soon as work starts hidden problems may emerge. You should also make plans for what you will do while you have no bath/shower/toilet.

3. Get the right balance

If you put emphasis on style, you may lose functionality. Equally, design is important, but you want your bathroom to work for you (and be an asset when you come to sell the property in the future).

4. Fixtures and features

It stands to reason that if you are renovating your bathroom you are replacing the bath, shower, toilet, sink, taps, tiles etc (or all of the above). However, you should not overlook storage, lighting and accessories. Make a good bathroom great by including enough space to keep toiletries tucked away, creating a relaxing atmosphere with lighting, making the best use of the space and investing in stylish accessories.

5. Ventilation

All bathrooms need good ventilation so take the time to choose the right fan, in the right position, with the right installation. Get it wrong and you can end up with a damp, mouldy bathroom.

6. Think green

Don't just think about how your bathroom will look, think of the environment too. Give your bathroom an eco lift with a low-flush toilet, low-flow showerhead, VOC- and solvent-free paints, and recycled tiles, for example.
