How to Select a New Bathtub

When updating or remodelling a bathroom, one of the items that requires particular attention is the bathtub.  Part of this has to do with the simple fact that it is the largest item in the room and by size alone plays a major part in setting the tone.  It is also the most difficult to replace if you decide that it isn’t what you want.

A previous article discussed some of the bathtub materials that are available and the pros and cons of each. This time we are offering some practical tips.

Size

First get the exact dimensions of the area. Your new bathtub does not have to take up the same amount of space as the old one, but be aware that changing the size may require additional work in terms of plumbing and flooring. The position of the waste is often moveable however this is generally the most important factor to discuss with the plumber first.

Installation

Consider all of the possible types of installations. Free-standing bathtubs add a nice stylish touch and can work with both modern and retro designs however more space is required for these products.  You also can choose from alcove styles, corner panelled, drop-ins and under mounts.  Tiled ledges are a nice and convenient touch, so you might want to look at that option as well.

The key point is to look at bathtub choices for each type of installation. Pick the one you want and use your selection as a basis to continue your planning from there.

Price

Your bathtub will probably be the most expensive fixture in your bathroom and usually is the dominant feature.  You should always go for the best quality bathtub that you can afford as it will need to last you a long time. Depending on the type of installation you choose, replacing an inferior bathtub can be far more expensive than buying a higher quality, but more expensive, bathtub to start with as labour costs in replacing a bath are generally very high.
