Why choose an electric shower?
These models do not deliver high pressure like a power shower would so why would you buy one? The answer depends on your water system. All products in this range require power and a mains pressure cold water supply. They work a little like a kettle in that they have an electric element inside that heats the water as it runs through, over and around the element. If you have a gravity fed water system like many houses in the UK still do then you might find a shower that is situated only a few feet below the cold water tank (in terms of height) will give very poor pressure (or maybe none at all). An electrical shower will take the mains pressure water feed and heat the water on demand so you can often have a shower in an area that otherwise might not be possible. In addition these items can be a great back up to a gas hot water boiler. If you have multiple showers in a house then having one of them supplied from this category will provide you with a good back up should something go wrong with the boiler.
Installing an Electric Shower - points to consider
- Always consult a qualified electrician and get them to give you advice on the installation beforehand.
- The choice of whether to go for an 8.5 or 9.5 Kilowatt model will depend on two factors 1. The higher the power the better the pressure of hot water delivered however the greater the energy consumed 2. The size of the cable and the RCD already in place (assuming you are replacing an existing model) - whether they are rated highly enough for the electrical loading.
- Mains water pressure - these devices require a mains water supply and you will need a minimum pressure in the main to ensure you get the performance out of them. So check the mains pressure with the plumber prior to product selection.
- Digital model only - consider where you are going to locate the power pack within 3.5 meters of the slimline controls - the airing cupboard or the loft are popular possibilities.
